How to Buy Fertilizer in Bulk: A Guide for Importers and Distributors

Buying fertilizer in bulk is a trade transaction, not a shopping trip. For importers, distributors, cooperatives and large farms, the price per tonne matters, but so do the specification, delivery terms, payment security and inspection. Getting those right protects you from poor quality, late shipments and fraud.

This guide walks through how a bulk fertilizer purchase works, from your first enquiry to delivery.

Step 1: Define exactly what you need

  • Product and grade, including physical form (granular, prilled, crystal)
  • Specification, such as minimum nutrient content, moisture and particle size
  • Quantity per shipment and per year
  • Packaging: 50 kg bags, big bags of about one tonne, or bulk
  • Destination port and the date you need the goods
  • Import rules in your country, such as registration and labelling

Step 2: Choose the delivery terms

TermWhat it means
FOBYou arrange and pay for the ship from the loading port
CFRThe seller pays freight to your port; you insure the cargo
CIFThe seller pays freight and insurance to your port
Incoterms decide who pays for what, and where risk passes to the buyer.

Step 3: Agree secure payment

For bulk cargoes, a documentary letter of credit (DLC) or a standby letter of credit (SBLC) protects both sides: the seller is paid only when the agreed shipping documents are presented. Be wary of any seller who insists on large advance payments by transfer before shipment.

Step 4: Insist on independent inspection

An inspection company such as SGS samples and tests the cargo at loading and confirms weight and quality. The certificate becomes one of the payment documents.

Step 5: Check the documents

A typical bulk fertilizer shipment comes with a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, certificate of analysis or quality, inspection certificate and, where needed, a safety data sheet.

How to spot an unreliable offer

  • A price well below the world market
  • No named producer or loading port
  • Requests for upfront fees or “procedure” payments
  • Refusal of independent inspection
  • Documents that cannot be verified

What drives bulk fertilizer prices

Prices follow world markets, natural gas costs and export policies, plus freight. In September 2026 the World Bank recorded urea at $407.50 per tonne (FOB Middle East), DAP at $800.60 and potassium chloride at $367.50. See what urea costs today.

Storing bulk fertilizer

Store fertilizer dry, covered and off the ground. Many fertilizers absorb moisture and cake. Keep incompatible products, such as urea and ammonium nitrate, apart.

Buying through Agromer

Agromer has been an international commodity trader since 1985, based in Saint-Avertin, France. We are the distributor for a major European NPK producer, including custom formulas, and we trade urea with major producers on spot and contract terms. For urea we require an end-buyer LOI. Payment is by 100% DLC or SBLC, with SGS inspection at loading. Send us the product, grade, quantity, packaging and destination. See our fertilizer range.

Before you send: Agromer trades with businesses only, in bulk shipments. We do not supply retail or small farm quantities. Payment is by irrevocable documentary letter of credit (DLC) or SBLC. For urea, coal and petroleum products, an end-buyer Letter of Intent is needed before an offer is issued.
