Product
What sulfur granular is
Almost all commercial sulphur is recovered at oil refineries and natural gas plants, which must remove sulphur from their products. The liquid sulphur is then formed into granules, typically 2 to 6 mm.
Granular sulphur is the standard traded form: it is hard, round and low in dust, so it handles cleanly, stores well and ships in bulk. Buyers melt it on arrival to make sulphuric acid or use it in fertilizers and industry.

Uses
Where granular sulfur goes
Most granular sulphur becomes sulphuric acid, which phosphate fertilizer plants and metal refineries use in very large volumes.
Sulphuric acid
The largest use. Acid plants melt granular sulphur and burn it to make sulphuric acid.
Phosphate fertilizers
Sulphuric acid turns phosphate rock into phosphoric acid for DAP, MAP and TSP.
Metal leaching
Acid for copper, cobalt and nickel extraction in Africa and Indonesia.
Fertilizers and industry
Sulphur bentonite (about 90% S), rubber vulcanisation and chemicals.
Market snapshot
Who trades granular sulphur
Supply follows oil and gas processing, led by the Gulf states, Kazakhstan and Canada. Demand comes from phosphate producers such as Morocco, Brazil and India, and from metal processors in Indonesia and Central Africa. Source: UN Comtrade 2024.
Shipping and packaging
How granular sulfur ships
Bulk vessels
The usual mode for large cargoes on long routes.
Big bags and containers
For smaller lots, ports without bulk handling or inland delivery.
