Most of the world’s urea comes from a few hundred large plants, built where natural gas is cheap. If you buy urea in bulk, knowing who actually makes it, and where, is the first step to understanding offers, freight costs and supply risk. This page explains how we structure our global urea fertilizer manufacturers database, gives a verified sample of producers by country, and shows how to use the information when you source.
One point up front. This is a research resource that we build and check record by record. You can search, filter, sort and download it below, but it only contains details we have confirmed from a public source, and it is not a complete list of every producer.
Why manufacturer data matters to buyers
A trader can offer you urea from almost anywhere. The manufacturer decides what you actually receive.
The plant determines the product form (granular or prilled), the typical specification, the loading port and often the export season. Two offers at the same price can mean very different things once you know which plant stands behind each one. One may be granular urea loading at a Gulf port with a reliable shipping line. The other may be prilled urea from an inland plant that relies on rail.
Manufacturer data also helps you spot problems early. If a seller cannot name the producing plant, or names one that does not export, that is worth knowing before anyone talks about payment.
How urea gets from the plant to the field
Urea is made by reacting ammonia with carbon dioxide. The ammonia itself is usually made from natural gas, so urea production clusters in gas-rich regions. See how urea is made for the full process.
The chain usually looks like this:
- Manufacturers produce urea, mostly 46% N fertilizer grade, plus technical and DEF grades at some sites.
- Exporters and trading houses buy from producers, or act for them, and sell into international markets.
- Importers and distributors bring cargoes into a country and sell on to blenders, retailers and cooperatives.
- End users are farms, plantations and industrial buyers.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, world ammonia production was about 156 million tonnes of contained nitrogen in 2024 and an estimated 160 million tonnes in 2025. China, Russia, India and the United States were the largest producers. Much of that ammonia is turned into urea. For trade flows, see our urea production and export data.

Urea producers we confirmed in October 2026, either on the company's official website or, where the website blocks automated checks, on Wikipedia (linked in the last column). Inclusion does not mean a company sells to every market or that Agromer represents it. Russian-linked producers: check the sanctions rules that apply to you before trading. Country export figures: UN Comtrade, HS 310210, 2024; blank means the country did not report. *Qatar did not report 2024 exports; the figure is partner-reported imports from Qatar, a minimum.
For trade figures for every reporting country, see the full urea country dataset.
Why we check every record
Many commercial company lists sold as “urea manufacturers” are built by keyword matching. When we reviewed one such list of more than 1,800 companies, most of its largest entries were fertilizer blenders, distributors, retailers or specialty-fertilizer makers, not urea plants. That matters if you are trying to reach the producer behind a cargo. We use lists like these only as leads, and add a company only after confirming that it actually makes urea.
Market reports and buyers also name Matix Fertilisers and Chemicals (India), Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals (India), İGSAŞ (Türkiye), LSB Industries (United States), Fertiberia (Spain) and Perdaman (Australia). We are still checking these and will add each one once a company or other reliable public source confirms its urea production. Perdaman’s Karratha project in Western Australia is a new urea plant that is not yet operating.
A few practical notes. Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi producers mainly supply their home markets, where demand is large and prices are regulated. Producers in the Gulf, North Africa, Nigeria and Southeast Asia are much more export-focused. For more on the biggest groups, read our profile of top urea manufacturers.
Country insights: where export urea is made
The Gulf. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain have low-cost gas and deep-water ports. Gulf granular urea is a reference product in world trade, and the World Bank’s urea benchmark is quoted FOB Middle East.
North Africa. Egypt and Algeria sit close to Europe, which makes them natural suppliers to the Mediterranean and European markets.
Russia. Russia is one of the largest producers and exporters. Buyers need to screen counterparties, banks and vessels against the sanctions rules that apply to them.
China. China is the largest producer by far, but most output stays at home. Reported urea exports fell sharply in 2024.
Southeast Asia and Nigeria. Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Nigeria export significant volumes, mostly granular.
For 2024 export volumes by country, see urea suppliers and exporters by country.
Urea fertilizer market size and outlook

Recent capacity and policy developments
The same report highlights several recent changes on the supply side:
- India: the government approved a new ammonia-urea complex at Namrup in Assam (Namrup-IV) in March 2025, with capacity of 12.7 lakh tonnes of urea a year.
- Ethiopia: Dangote Group and Ethiopian Investment Holdings agreed in August 2025 to build a urea complex at Gode with capacity of 3 million tonnes a year. The investment, first put at US$2.5 billion, was later raised to more than US$4 billion.
- Brazil: Petrobras restarted its FAFEN-BA plant in Bahia in December 2025, producing ammonia and urea. Petrobras puts Brazil’s urea consumption at about 8 million tonnes a year.
- European Union: in May 2026 the EU Council suspended import tariffs on urea and ammonia for one year.
- Egypt: thyssenkrupp Uhde is adding carbon capture to MOPCO’s three plants at Damietta, designed to capture up to 145,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
- China: Stamicarbon’s ultra-low-energy urea technology was adopted at the Lianmeng complex in December 2025.
New plants take years to build, so for buying decisions today the existing producers in the table above matter most.
How buyers use manufacturer information
- Map the likely origins. Start with plants that ship to your region at a sensible freight cost.
- Check the product. Confirm the plant makes the form you need, granular or prilled, and in which specification.
- Trace every offer back to a plant. Ask the seller to name the producer and loading port.
- Screen the counterparty. Check company registration, sanctions lists and banking details.
- Agree inspection. Independent inspection at loading confirms quality and weight.
Manufacturers rarely sell small, one-off cargoes directly to new buyers. Many sell through long-term offtake agreements, tenders or established trading partners. That is normal, and it is one reason buyers work with traders.
What to check before you contact a producer
- Specification: nitrogen 46% minimum, biuret, moisture and granule size. See urea N46 specifications.
- Quantity and packaging: bulk vessel, big bags or 50 kg bags.
- Minimum quantities: these vary by producer and route, so ask rather than assume.
- Delivery terms: FOB or CFR/CIF, and your discharge port’s limits.
- Payment: documentary letter of credit or SBLC is standard for bulk cargoes.
- Import rules: registration, labelling and any quality testing in your country.
Commercial terms always depend on the supplier, the destination, the contract and the market at the time.
Working with Agromer
Agromer has been an international commodity trader since 1985, based in Saint-Avertin, France. We trade urea with major producers on spot and contract terms. For urea we work with an end-buyer LOI, payment by 100% DLC or SBLC, and SGS inspection at loading. Tell us the product form, specification, quantity, packaging and destination port, and we will check what we can offer. See also what urea costs today and our main urea fertilizer page.
Frequently asked questions
Who are the largest urea manufacturers in the world?
Large producers include groups in China, Russia, India, the United States, the Gulf, Egypt, Nigeria and Indonesia. Rankings change with plant output and ownership, so check recent company reports before relying on any single ranking.
Which countries make the most urea?
Urea follows ammonia production. In 2025, the USGS estimates China, Russia, India and the United States were the largest ammonia producers.
How big is the urea fertilizer market?
Coherent Market Insights estimates it at US$32.71 billion in 2026, growing to US$45.11 billion by 2033 (4.7% a year). These are estimates from a market research firm, not official data.
Can I buy urea directly from a manufacturer?
Sometimes, but many producers sell through long-term contracts, tenders or appointed traders, and new buyers often start through a trading partner.
Can I download the urea manufacturers database?
Yes. Use the Download CSV button above the table to save the records you see, including any search or filter you have applied.
How do you verify each manufacturer?
We confirm that the company makes urea on its official website. If the website blocks automated checks, we use Wikipedia and link to the page we used. We do not add companies based only on directories or keyword lists.
Does this database include contact details?
We link to official company websites and published sales contacts only. We do not publish private emails or personal phone numbers.
What is the difference between granular and prilled urea manufacturers?
The plant’s finishing technology decides the form. Granulators produce larger, harder granules; prilling towers produce smaller beads. Many export plants produce granular urea.
How do I check that a urea seller is genuine?
Ask for the producing plant and loading port, verify the company’s registration, screen it against sanctions lists, and insist on independent inspection and a secure payment instrument.
