In October 2026, DAP averaged $803 a tonne, its highest level since 2022, while urea averaged $420 after a sharp spike in the spring. Potash (MOP) was $358 and TSP $692. These are World Bank benchmark prices, and this page tracks them month by month.

What happened to fertilizer prices in 2026
Urea: a spring spike, then a fall
Urea started 2026 at about $415 a tonne. It rose to $726 in March and $857 in April, the highest monthly average since 2022, before falling back to $453 in June and $390 in August. By October it was $420. Over the same months the World Bank’s European natural gas price, a major cost for nitrogen producers, rose from about $12 to $28.50 per million British thermal units.
Urea prices move quickly with gas costs, export policies in major producing countries and the timing of large import tenders. See the cost of urea fertilizer for what drives the price.
Phosphates: a steady climb
DAP rose almost every month of 2026, from $619 in January to $803 in October. TSP followed the same path. The phosphate rock benchmark also moved up, from $152.50 to $170 a tonne in mid-year, the first change in that series since 2024. Our DAP fertilizer price page looks at phosphate prices in more detail.
Potash: stable to softer
MOP climbed from $366 in January to a peak of $405 in May, then eased to $358 by October. Potash has been the most stable of the major nutrients over the past two years.
Annual averages since 2019
| Year | Urea | DAP | TSP | MOP | Phosphate rock | Urea to maize ratio |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 (10 months) | 531 | 736 | 654 | 384 | 160 | 2.46 |
| 2025 | 423 | 685 | 578 | 348 | 153 | 2.08 |
| 2024 | 338 | 564 | 475 | 295 | 153 | 1.77 |
| 2023 | 358 | 550 | 480 | 383 | 324 | 1.42 |
| 2022 | 700 | 772 | 716 | 863 | 266 | 2.20 |
| 2021 | 483 | 601 | 538 | 543 | 123 | 1.86 |
| 2020 | 229 | 312 | 265 | 241 | 76 | 1.38 |
| 2019 | 245 | 306 | 295 | 256 | 88 | 1.44 |
The 2022 peak stands out: monthly prices reached $925 for urea, $954 for DAP and $1,202 for MOP in April 2022. Prices fell sharply in 2023, but in 2026 urea and DAP are again well above their 2019 and 2020 levels.
Fertilizer affordability
Prices alone do not show whether fertilizer is affordable for farmers. What matters is the fertilizer price compared with the price of the crop it is used on. The table above includes one simple measure: the urea price divided by the maize price (both in US dollars per tonne, World Bank benchmarks).
- In 2019 the ratio averaged 1.44: a tonne of urea cost about as much as 1.4 tonnes of maize.
- In 2022, during the price crisis, it averaged 2.20.
- In 2026 so far it averages 2.46, higher than in 2022, because maize prices are much lower than they were then.
For phosphate the picture is similar. The DAP to wheat (US HRW) ratio averaged 1.52 in 2019, rose to 2.82 in 2025 and is 2.49 in 2026 so far. When these ratios are high, farmers tend to cut application rates, which can affect yields the following season.
How to use these prices
- They are benchmarks, not offers. Each series is for one product, one location and one set of terms. A CFR price to your port can be very different.
- Compare like with like. Prilled and granular urea, standard and granular MOP, and FOB and CFR prices are all priced separately. Our urea fertilizer guide covers the product forms.
- Watch freight. Freight is a large share of the delivered cost of bulk fertilizer, especially for long routes.
- Use them to judge timing and to check offers, alongside current quotations.
