Liquid Biofertilizer: Types, Uses and Bulk Supply

A liquid biofertilizer is a fertilizer sold in liquid form that relies on living organisms or organic inputs to feed the crop. The term covers two quite different kinds of product, and buyers often mix them up: microbial inoculants, which carry live bacteria or fungi, and liquid organic fertilizers sold by nutrient formula.

Agromer supplies liquid biofertilizers in formulas such as 3.2.2, 2.2.2, 4.2.2 and 4.3.3, chosen according to the buyer’s need, for distributors and commercial growers. This guide explains the types, how they are used and what to check before a bulk order.

TypeWhat it doesTypical crops
Nitrogen-fixing bacteria (for example Rhizobium, Azotobacter, Azospirillum)Capture nitrogen from the air and make it available to the plantLegumes (Rhizobium); cereals and vegetables (free-living types)
Phosphate-solubilising microbesRelease phosphorus that is held in forms the plant cannot useMost field and horticultural crops
Potassium-mobilising microbesMake soil potassium more availableMost crops

Main categories. A product can combine several of these. What may be claimed on the label depends on the regulations in each market.

How liquid biofertilizers are used

  • Seed treatment: coating seed before sowing, common for legume inoculants.
  • Soil or drench application: applied to the soil or around the root zone.
  • Fertigation: injected into drip or sprinkler systems, where liquids are easier to handle than powders.
  • Foliar spray: for some liquid organic formulas, following the label.

Liquid products mix easily, flow through irrigation equipment and spread evenly, which is why fertigation growers often prefer them.

What biofertilizers can and cannot do

Microbial products can improve nutrient availability and root health, and legume inoculants can supply a large share of a legume’s nitrogen. Results depend heavily on the soil, the crop, the organisms and how the product has been stored. Biofertilizers usually work best alongside a balanced fertilizer programme, not as a full replacement for it. Be cautious with any product that promises fixed yield increases.

Quality points for buyers

Microbial products

  • Organism and count: the species and the number of viable cells (often stated as CFU per millilitre) at the end of shelf life, not only at manufacture.
  • Shelf life and storage: live organisms need protection from heat and direct sun. Ask for storage temperature limits and plan transport accordingly.
  • Contamination: limits on unwanted organisms.
  • Compatibility: some pesticides and fertilizers can harm the organisms, so check before tank-mixing.

Liquid organic formulas

  • Analysis: what the formula numbers refer to, and the stated nutrient and organic matter content.
  • Source materials: what the product is made from.
  • Physical properties: density, pH, solids and sediment, which matter for fertigation filters.

For both

  • Registration: many countries require biofertilizers and organic fertilizers to be registered before sale. Check the rules in your market.
  • Certification: organic input approval, if you need it.
  • Documents: certificate of analysis and product data sheet.

Packaging and bulk supply

Liquid biofertilizers are commonly packed in jerrycans, drums or IBC containers. Agree the container type, labelling language, quantity and delivery terms in the enquiry. Our guide to requesting a bulk commodity quotation explains what to include.

Liquid biofertilizers from Agromer

Agromer has traded agricultural commodities internationally since 1985 from Saint-Avertin, France. Our organic fertilizer range includes liquid biofertilizers in formulas such as 3.2.2, 2.2.2, 4.2.2 and 4.3.3, manure pellets, blood and bone fertilizer and lithothamnium. Tell us your crop, application method and market, and we suggest a formula and confirm the certificates available. We supply businesses only, in bulk, and payment is by documentary letter of credit or SBLC.

Before you send: Agromer trades with businesses only, in bulk shipments. We do not supply retail or small farm quantities. Payment is by irrevocable documentary letter of credit (DLC) or SBLC. For urea, coal and petroleum products, an end-buyer Letter of Intent is needed before an offer is issued.

Frequently asked questions

What is a liquid biofertilizer?

A biofertilizer in liquid form. It may contain live microbes that improve nutrient availability, or be a liquid organic fertilizer sold by nutrient formula. Some products combine both.

How do you apply liquid biofertilizer?

By seed treatment, soil drench, fertigation or, for some formulas, foliar spray. Follow the product label for rates and timing.

Are biofertilizers better than chemical fertilizers?

They do different jobs. Biofertilizers can improve nutrient availability and soil biology, while mineral fertilizers supply nutrients in fixed, concentrated amounts. Most commercial programmes use both.

How long do liquid biofertilizers last?

It depends on the product. Microbial products lose viability over time, especially in heat, so check the shelf life and storage conditions stated by the producer.

Which liquid biofertilizer formulas does Agromer supply?

Formulas such as 3.2.2, 2.2.2, 4.2.2 and 4.3.3, chosen according to your need. Ask us for the specification of each.

Do I need a licence to import biofertilizers?

In many countries, yes. Biofertilizers and organic fertilizers often need registration before sale. Check your national rules; we can provide product documents for your application.
