Understanding Price of Indonesian Coal

Indonesia is a major player in the global coal market, and the price of Indonesian coal per ton can change due to various factors. These factors include global demand, supply levels, economic conditions, and even geopolitical events.

The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources just issued the Indonesian thermal coal reference price (HBA) for February 2024. Prices for various kinds of coal were varied compared to the previous month.

According to the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mines, exact coal grades and reference prices for all kinds of coal in February are as follows:

HBA: High 6322 kcal (12.26% total water, 0.66% total sulfur, 7.94% ash) thermal coal reference price is 124.95 US dollars/ton, down 3.9 US dollars/ton from the previous month, representing a 3% decline, as the calorific value is 6100-6500.

HBA I: High 5,300 kcal (full water 21.32%, total sulfur 0.75%, ash 6.04%) thermal coal reference price is 87.65 US dollars/ton, an increase of 0.29 US dollars/ton from the previous month, or 0.3%, as the calorific value is 5100- Reference price of 5,500 kcal thermal coal.

HBA II: The reference price of high-level 4100 kcal (full water 35.73%, total sulfur 0.23%, ash 3.90%) thermal coal is US$ 58.86 per ton, which is US$0.7/ton lower than the previous month, a 1.2% decline, as the calorific value is 3900-4300 kcal thermal coal reference price.

HBA III: High 3400 kcal (full water 44.3%, total sulfur 0.24%, ash 3.88%) thermal coal reference price is 37.54 US dollars per ton, up 0.45 US dollars per ton from the previous month, or a 1.2% rise, as the calorific value is 3200 -3600 kcal thermal coal reference price.

Previously, the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mines separated thermal coal reference prices into three levels: 6200-6400 kcal, 5200-6000 kcal, and 4100-4300 kcal, effective March 2023.

In the most recent reference price adjustment in August of that year, the grade range of coal calorific value was refined from three to four levels, and the reference price of ultra-low-calorie coal grades with a calorific value of 3200-3600 kcal was added. Adjusting the thermal coal reference price classification again gives miners additional leeway to adjust to the rise in production costs caused by the mining rights tax hike.

The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mines reported that the most recent adjusted reference price formula is based on prices from the fourth week two months ago to the first week of the previous month (30%) and the second and third weeks of the previous month (70%).

Factors Affecting Indonesian Coal Prices

  1. Global Demand: Countries like China, India, and Japan significantly influence coal prices when their demand increases.
  2. Supply: Changes in coal production in Indonesia or other major coal-producing regions can affect the supply and, therefore, the price.
  3. Economic Conditions: Economic ups and downs can impact the global demand for coal, leading to price fluctuations.
  4. Geopolitical Events: Political instability, trade disputes, or natural disasters can disrupt coal supply chains and drive prices up or down.

The Impact of Indonesian Coal Prices on the Global Market

Indonesia’s coal exports are crucial to the global energy market. Changes in the cost of Indonesian coal can affect countries that rely on coal for energy production and have wider implications for the global energy market.

  1. Power Generation Costs: Higher coal prices can lead to increased electricity costs in coal-dependent countries.
  2. Competition with Other Fuels: Fluctuating coal prices can make coal more or less competitive compared to other fuels like natural gas or renewable energy.
  3. Geopolitical Implications: Restricting coal exports or imposing tariffs can cause tensions between Indonesia and importing countries, potentially disrupting global energy supply chains.

Future Projections for Indonesian Coal

The price of Indonesian coal is expected to remain unstable, influenced by global market dynamics and environmental policies. As countries shift toward renewable energy, the demand for coal may decrease, but Indonesia can still play a role by adopting sustainable mining practices and investing in renewable energy.
